Predator Kids: Protect Yourself
It is sadly not uncommon for a bad child to steal from a parent, especially as the parent or other benefactor ages or becomes infirm. The child may feel they are taking care of the parent so that therefore they are justified in taking what they are entitled to. That is often not the parent’s intent. The bad child may pay themselves excessive fees, expenses paid from a trust or mom’s assets start to favor them. Often these situations grow into larger and worse bad acts. Sometimes they may grow into outright theft. Because the child may feel justified by the fact that they are caretaking for mom address that head on. Pay the child helping for their effort. Sometimes it is really acknowledgement that they want. In one case father gave his sone the family business and the son fired his father. Use checks and balances. If you use a revocable trust have a co-trustee and an independent trust protector.
