Predator Cults: Protect Yourself

It may be difficult to distinguish a predatory cult from a legitimate faith based or other group. But care is in order as there are many groups that might be categorized as cults that seek out vulnerable individuals for the sole purpose of bringing them into the cult and stealing their money. Be wary of groups that prey on the vulnerable. Those coming into a large inheritance may be particularly vulnerable. There is often information online that can be mined to identify targets. Try to maintain confidentiality in your estate planning to minimize that risk. Make a concerted effort to educate your heirs about wealth in advance so that the risk of their emotional upheaval when that inheritance or trust fund becomes available is less. Use robust trusts with independent trustees to protect wealth that will be given or bequeathed.
