Use a Special Revocable Trust to Help Someone with Addiction Issues

This is a very limited but potentially helpful application or variation of the common revocable trust document that is commonly used in estate planning. Assume a family member or friend is struggling with addiction, such as drinking and gambling. With therapy they understand that the money they have (e.g., a recent inheritance that was bequeathed outright to this person) is vital to their financial future and should be preserved, but the magnetism of those funds keeps drawing them into to use it for funding their addictive activities. They want and will need access to these funds in the future and their resources are limited so more complex irrevocable trusts are ruled out. So, instead they create a revocable trust naming an independent trustee. Perhaps the trust has a mechanism that requires the approval of a majority of three named people for the them to modify or revoke the trust. They will create guardrails on their own use of their own money. They will be able to benefit from it.
